Brazil’s quest for World Cup glory has taken another dramatic turn. The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) has dismissed head coach Dorival Junior following a crushing 4-1 defeat to arch-rivals Argentina in World Cup qualifying. Despite sitting fourth in the South American group, Brazil’s inconsistent form proved too costly for Dorival’s tenure.
The 62-year-old took charge in January 2024, inheriting a squad in transition. His reign began with a promising 1-0 win over England at Wembley, but his overall record with seven wins, six draws, and three losses in 16 matches, failed to convince. The humiliating loss to Argentina was the final straw, prompting the CBF to act swiftly. “The board wishes him success in his continued career,” the federation said in a brief statement, confirming their search for a replacement.
Dorival’s greatest achievement came at club level, leading Flamengo to Copa Libertadores glory in 2022. However, managing the Seleção brought an entirely different level of pressure. Brazil, five-time world champions, have struggled to regain their dominance, and their latest setback raises urgent questions about the team’s direction ahead of the 2026 World Cup.
Attention now turns to who will take over. Al-Hilal coach Jorge Jesus is reportedly the frontrunner, though Brazil previously pursued Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti before settling on Dorival. However some sources believe, the CBF is once again considering Ancelotti for the 2026 tournament.
Brazil remains well-placed to qualify, but expectations are far greater than just reaching the World Cup. With their fierce rivals Argentina already securing a spot, the pressure is on for Brazil to rediscover their winning identity.
