In a powerful statement of intent, CAF has announced a 100% increase in prize money for the winners of the delayed 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), taking the top reward to $1 million as part of a sweeping 45% rise in total tournament payouts.

The move, revealed by CAF president Dr Patrice Motsepe, underscores the confederation’s growing commitment to elevating women’s football across the continent. It’s not just about trophies anymore, it’s about tangible reward, recognition, and respect.

“This increase,” Motsepe said, “should contribute to the salaries of players, coaches, and staff and will help further the professionalisation of the women’s game.” With more eyes on the tournament than ever, through broadcasting, sponsorship, and growing stadium attendances, CAF sees WAFCON Morocco 2024 as a turning point.

The prize breakdown reflects that ambition: runners-up will receive $500,000, third-place teams $350,000, and even fourth-placed sides take home $300,000. Quarter-finalists and group-stage teams won’t be left behind either, with sums ranging from $125,000 to $200,000.

This investment signals a major shift in how women’s football is valued in Africa. From South Africa’s historic triumph in 2022 to Morocco’s spirited run to the final, WAFCON has steadily earned its global relevance and now, its financial clout matches that momentum.

With a total prize pool of $3.475 million, WAFCON 2024 is set not only to showcase talent but to transform lives.
