The Boston Celtics pulled off a stunning 120-117 victory over the previously undefeated Cleveland Cavaliers in the NBA Cup at TD Garden. Jayson Tatum’s impressive performance led six Celtics players in double figures, handing the Cavs their first defeat.
The Cavaliers had made history by starting the season 15-0, becoming the fourth franchise in NBA history to achieve this feat. However, the Celtics were determined to spoil their party.
Tatum’s 33 points, 12 rebounds, and 7 assists spearheaded the Celtics’ attack. His teammates, including Derrick White, Marcus Smart, and Grant Williams, contributed to the win.
Trailing 17 points at halftime, Evan Mobley sparked a Cavaliers comeback, finishing with 22 points, 11 rebounds, and 6 assists. The Cavs narrowed the gap to two points midway through the final quarter, but the Celtics held on.
“Everybody knew they were undefeated and coming to our building,” said Celtics’ guard Derrick White. “It’s an NBA Cup game, and we already lost one. So, it was a really big game in that aspect. We were all aware.”
Launched in 2023, the NBA Cup counts towards regular-season standings but not the Championship. The LA Lakers won the inaugural tournament.
