Black Stars stay 72nd as FIFA rankings close the year

Ghana end 2025 standing still in the FIFA Men’s World Rankings, but the numbers tell a story deeper than position alone. The Black Stars finish the year 72nd in the world and 14th in Africa, unchanged from November. Yet behind the static ranking sits a year that offered quiet encouragement.

The latest FIFA update, released earlier today, confirms Ghana’s place among the world’s top 75 teams. Their points total remains fixed at 1,351, a reflection of limited movement across the international calendar. On the surface, it feels underwhelming for a nation built on football pride.

Context, however, matters. Twelve months ago, Ghana were ranked 77th globally, a position that raised concern after difficult spells in major tournaments. Ending 2025 five places higher suggests stability, even if momentum stalled late in the year.

On the African stage, the Black Stars remain 14th, behind continental leaders Morocco. Senegal sit second, with Algeria, Egypt, and Nigeria completing Africa’s top five. Ghana’s position mirrors a continent that continues to grow stronger and more competitive.

Globally, Spain close the year as the world’s top-ranked team. Argentina and France follow, with England and Brazil rounding out the top five. The hierarchy underlines the challenge Ghana face as they try to bridge the gap to elite level.

The rankings alone do not capture Ghana’s full year. The Black Stars played ten matches in 2025, winning six, drawing one, and losing three. They scored 21 goals and conceded just six, numbers that point to attacking confidence and defensive control.

Those figures suggest a team finding balance again. Ghana looked sharper going forward and more disciplined at the back, traits missing in previous campaigns. The lack of ranking movement reflects timing and opposition, not a lack of growth.

There is also a wider context to Ghana’s continental standing. Most teams in Africa’s top 20 failed to qualify for the 2025 AFCON, underlining how fine the margins were across the region. Ghana’s steady ranking places them in the middle of a tightly packed field.

Attention now turns to what comes next. In March, the Black Stars regroup for a high-profile friendly against Germany in Stuttgart. It is a test, a marker, and a chance to turn quiet progress into visible momentum ahead of the 2026 World Cup push.
