Arsenal have secured the signature of Spain midfielder Martín Zubimendi from Real Sociedad, completing a €60 million move that could reshape their midfield for years to come.

The Gunners triggered Zubimendi’s release clause to beat off interest from European heavyweights including Real Madrid and Manchester City, underlining their intent to reinforce with elite talent. The 26-year-old arrives at the Emirates after a standout campaign with Sociedad and a defining role in Spain’s triumphant Euro 2024 run.

Zubimendi’s decision ends a long chase. He turned down a Premier League move last summer when Liverpool identified him as a priority target. Staying with Sociedad proved wise, as he matured further and cemented his reputation as one of Europe’s finest deep-lying midfielders.

His calmness under pressure was on full display in the Euro 2024 final, where he replaced the injured Rodri at half-time and helped steer Spain past England 2-1. That performance reportedly reignited Madrid’s interest, but Arsenal had already acted decisively, reaching an agreement as early as March.

Sources indicate manager Mikel Arteta played a personal role in luring his compatriot to north London. With Zubimendi joining last summer’s signing and former Sociedad teammate Mikel Merino, Arsenal are assembling a Spanish core in midfield.

Over five years with Sociedad’s senior team, Zubimendi made 170+ appearances, consistently excelling in both domestic and European competitions. Born in San Sebastián and a graduate of the club’s academy, his departure marks the end of an era in the Basque Country.

At Arsenal, he brings composure, tactical discipline, and passing range, traits the Gunners lacked in crunch moments last season. With Declan Rice and Martin Ødegaard, Arteta now has a trio capable of dominating any midfield in Europe.
