This conversation will feature some of Ghana’s most prominent media professionals on Friday, May 2, 2025, to commemorate World Press Freedom Day with young and aspiring journalists.
The event, organized under the Newsroom Business Initiative (NBI), promises a day of mentorship, insight-sharing and a deep dive into the future of journalism in an AI-driven era.
This year’s celebration, themed “Freedom of Expression in the Face of the AI Revolution,” brings together industry heavyweights including Theo Yartey, Editor-Graphic at Graphic Communications Group Ltd; Emefa Ewoenam Atiamoah-Eli, Coordinator for Strategic Partnerships and Projects at JoyBrands-MGL; Kobby Spiky Nkrumah, Head of EIB Digital; Dr. Ohene Asante, Executive Secretary of the World Technology Forum; John Kumi, Head of Department for Media Communication at Bluecrest University College; and Raymond Smith of AfriMass Network.
In a statement released ahead of the event, organizers emphasized the importance of the initiative in shaping the future of media in Ghana.
“As custodians of truth and transparency, we recognize the immense responsibility that comes with journalism. Through this collaboration, we hope to not only celebrate press freedom but also instill a deep sense of purpose in the young professionals who will carry the mantle forward,” the staement outlined.
The event will be held at 10 a.m. on May 2, 2025, and is expected to draw dozens of young journalists, students and media enthusiasts who will engage in thought-provoking panel discussions, mentorship sessions, and interactive activities centered around ethics, innovation, and professionalism in the newsroom.
Initiated in 2024 by AfriMass Network and its partners, the Newsroom Business Initiative (NBI) is a transformative project launched to empower young journalists and promote sustainable newsroom practices across the country.
By fostering industry mentorship and integrating technology, the NBI aims to address the challenges confronting African news media and to leverage journalism for socio-economic development.
According to organizers, the event serves as a stark reminder of the collective effort needed to safeguard press freedom in an increasingly digitized and politically charged environment.
“The celebration of World Press Freedom Day at BlueCrest University College highlights that protecting press freedom requires vigilance, strategic dialogue, and the nurturing of future newsroom leaders,” organizers noted in a statement.
This year’s discussions will also focus on the role of artificial intelligence in shaping the media landscape, raising questions about ethical reporting, misinformation, and the potential for AI to either aid or hinder journalistic integrity.
