President John Dramani Mahama has called on newly appointed Justices of the Supreme Court to rise above legal formalities and commit themselves to delivering true justice that reflects the moral and constitutional aspirations of the Ghanaian people.
Speaking during the swearing-in ceremony of seven new Supreme Court Justices at the Jubilee House on Thursday, President Mahama emphasized that their new role is not only legal but also profoundly moral in nature.
“You are expected to serve not as arbiters of technicalities, but as stewards of justice and conscience,” the President stated. “Yours is not only a legal role, but a moral responsibility to safeguard our Constitution’s spirit and interpret it in ways that advance the common good and protect the most vulnerable in our society.”
He described their elevation to the apex court as “a high constitutional trust,” symbolizing not just individual merit and legal acumen, but also the hopes of a nation in a period of renewal and institutional reform.
“All of you come onto the Supreme Court with vast experience and a solid knowledge of the law, and are deserving of this high office,” he added.
Defending Democracy and the Rule of Law
President Mahama underscored the critical role the Supreme Court plays in protecting Ghana’s democracy and legal order. He reminded the new Justices that the court must remain a pillar of fairness, impartiality, and courage—especially in times of constitutional uncertainty.
“The Supreme Court of Ghana stands as the final custodian of our laws, the guardian of our democracy, and the protector of the rights and liberties of all our citizens,” he said. “It is to this court that people turn when their freedoms are threatened, when justice seems distant, or when the complexities of modern governance test the Constitution.”
A Milestone in Judicial Reform
The ceremony represents another significant milestone in the Mahama administration’s ongoing judicial reforms, aimed at restoring public trust in state institutions and fortifying the rule of law under Ghana’s Fourth Republic.
The seven new Supreme Court Justices, who were confirmed by Parliament following rigorous vetting earlier this year, are Justices Sir Dennis Dominic Adjei, Gbiel Simon Suurbaareh, Senyo Dzamefe, Kweku Tawiah Ackaah-Boafo, Philip Bright Mensah, Janapare Bartels-Kodwo and Justice Hafisata Amaleboba.
