The University of Cape Coast (UCC) has named Professor Denis Worlanyo Aheto, the institution’s Pro Vice-Chancellor, as Interim Vice-Chancellor following a directive from the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC).
The appointment was announced after an emergency meeting of the University’s Governing Council on September 24, 2025.
In an official statement signed by Registrar and Secretary to Council Gideon Enoch Abbeyquaye, UCC confirmed its full compliance with GTEC’s instructions. The statement said Professor Aheto would serve in an acting capacity during the transition.
This move comes after GTEC directed the former Vice-Chancellor, Professor Johnson Nyarko Boampong, to step down for exceeding the constitutional retirement age of 60 for public officers.
In a letter dated September 19, 2025, GTEC cited Article 199(1) of the 1992 Constitution, which mandates retirement at age 60 unless otherwise provided by law, noting that Prof. Boampong’s continued tenure was in breach of this provision.
GTEC also referenced the University of Cape Coast Act (PNDCL 278) and the University’s statutes that limit the Vice-Chancellor’s tenure and uphold the constitutional retirement rules.
The legal dispute over Prof. Boampong’s tenure is currently before the Cape Coast High Court. Meanwhile, GTEC has instructed that no permanent appointment should be made until the case is resolved.
The University’s Governing Council reassured students, staff, and stakeholders that academic and administrative functions would continue without interruption during this period. Professor Aheto will lead the institution on an interim basis until the matter is settled.
