Minority Caucus in Parliament has announced its full backing and participation in a nationwide protest set for Monday, May 5, 2025.

The demonstration is being organized by a coalition of opposition and independent political parties to express concern over what they describe as a decline in democratic governance.

The coalition includes the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), National Democratic Party (NDP), and People’s National Party (PNP), all of whom are mobilizing for what they say is a defense of Ghana’s democratic principles.

In a statement dated April 30, 2025, and signed by Minority Chief Whip Frank Annoh-Dompreh, the caucus described the protest as more than a political expression — calling it a “constitutional obligation” to protect the rule of law and judicial independence.

The Minority raised alarm over growing threats to Ghana’s democratic institutions, citing particularly what they consider the wrongful dismissal of public servants. They argued such actions erode national unity and economic fairness, especially for young people aspiring to enter public service.

Further deepening their concerns, the statement highlighted alleged plans to remove the Chairperson and deputies of the Electoral Commission. The Minority warned that any such move could spark a broader crisis of legitimacy and undermine the public’s trust in the electoral process.

“This is not a matter of party interest,” the caucus stressed. “It is about standing up for justice, the constitution, and the foundational values of our democracy.”

The statement closed with a firm call to citizens and civil society to speak out against what they view as a dangerous trajectory.
