President John Dramani Mahama has emphasized the importance of fiscal discipline within his administration, urging deputy ministers to ensure that public funds are used for the benefit of Ghanaians rather than government officials.
During the swearing-in ceremony of 13 deputy ministers and a minister of state at Jubilee House on Wednesday, March 12, 2025, the President reiterated his commitment to responsible spending as part of his lean government approach.
“Our decision to run a lean government is not just about reducing the number of ministers or staff at the Presidency,” he stated.
“It is based on the principle that public resources must be used wisely. The government must exercise financial discipline to ensure that resources are allocated efficiently and responsibly” he added.
He further stressed the need to balance government spending with the financial burden placed on citizens through taxation.
“Public funds must go primarily into investments that directly benefit Ghanaians. Those who oversee these funds must not be the biggest beneficiaries,” he warned.
The president’s remarks align with his administration’s decision to minimize political appointments, limiting deputy ministers to ministries that require additional support. He also announced a reduction in the number of presidential staffers compared to the previous government.
