South African Football Association (SAFA) President, Danny Jordaan, was arrested on Wednesday following allegations of misusing the organisation’s funds for personal gain.
The arrest follows a police raid on SAFA’s offices in March, which uncovered claims that between 2014 and 2018, Jordaan used the association’s resources for personal expenses.
These included hiring a private security firm for his protection and engaging a public relations company, all without approval from the SAFA board.
Jordaan, who played a key role in securing South Africa’s hosting of the 2010 World Cup, had tried to block his arrest by seeking a court injunction.
However, the Johannesburg High Court is not set to hear his case until Thursday.
In addition to Jordaan, SAFA’s chief financial officer, Gronie Hluyo, and businessman Trevor Neethling also face charges related to the case.
All three individuals are expected to appear in court later today.
Jordaan maintains his innocence, denying any wrongdoing in his legal submission.
