An Accra High Court has denied bail to Oliver Barker-Vormawor, a prominent activist and convener of the Democracy Hub, following his arrest during a recent anti-galamsey protest .
Barker-Vormawor was among the demonstrators voicing opposition to illegal mining, which poses significant environmental risks to Ghana.
According to police reports, Barker-Vormawor was arrested for engaging in illegal activities during the protest, including removing the keys from a parked police van. The judge cited his ongoing treason trial as reason for denying bail, stating there’s no assurance he won’t commit another offense if released.
Barker-Vormawor’s legal team argued his detention violates his constitutional rights to free expression and peaceful assembly, emphasizing the protests were non-violent and aimed at raising awareness about galamsey’s harm.
However, the court granted bail to fellow protester Felicity Nelson, with a 20,000 cedi bond and two sureties. Up to 12 other protesters have also received bail with varying terms, adding complexity to the case and its implications for civil rights and environmental advocacy in Ghana.
