The National Youth Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Salam Mustapha, has taken a strong stance against the Electoral Commission’s (EC) decision to conduct a rerun of the parliamentary election in 19 polling stations within the Ablekuma North Constituency.
According to him, the Electoral Commission does not have unilateral authority to initiate a partial rerun, and doing so sets a troubling precedent.
Speaking on Channel One TV Mustapha announced that the NPP had filed an interlocutory injunction to halt the EC’s plan, which he said lacks legal backing and undermines democratic norms.
“This action opens the door for political manipulation. It implies that any party sensing defeat can cause chaos and push for a rerun in areas it deems favorable,” Mustapha stated.
He stressed that any rerun should only proceed based on a court directive, not an administrative decision by the EC.
On July 2, 2025, the EC announced that 19 of the 281 polling stations would conduct a rerun due to issues related to unverified scanned pink sheets. The NDC welcomed the decision and expressed confidence in Ewurabena Aubynn’s prospects, but the NPP firmly opposed it.
Salam Mustapha insisted that the rerun was unjustified and lacked stakeholder consensus. “This is not a democratic process. The EC should not be allowed to act as judge and jury in this matter,” he said.
The NPP is now seeking legal intervention to stop the rerun, which is scheduled for July 11, 2025. Meanwhile, both parties have ramped up campaign activities as the outcome of the rerun will determine whether Nana Akua retains her seat or if Ewurabena Aubynn secures victory for the NDC.
