Minority blames gov’t for ongoing power crisis

The Minority in Parliament is demanding urgent action from the administration of President John Dramani Mahama to address persistent power outages across the country.

At a press conference on Tuesday, April 28, the Member of Parliament for Afigya Kwabre North, Collins Adomako-Mensah, criticised the government’s handling of the energy situation and dismissed claims linking the outages primarily to the recent fire at the Ghana Grid Company substation in Akosombo.

According to him, the ongoing power challenges—commonly referred to as dumsor—began long before the April 23 incident and cannot be attributed to a single event.

He argued that while the fire may have worsened the situation temporarily, it does not account for the recurring outages experienced in many parts of the country since early 2025.

“I must state plainly: Ghana’s power crisis was not caused by the Akosombo incident. It predates it,” he said, adding that the government should not use the development as justification for the prolonged disruptions.

Mr. Adomako-Mensah further insisted that the Minority would resist any attempt to shift blame, urging authorities to take responsibility and implement lasting solutions.

Meanwhile, residents across several parts of the country continue to face unannounced power cuts, with increasing calls for a clear load-shedding timetable and comprehensive reforms to stabilise the energy sector.
