For the first time in over two decades, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo have not been nominated for the prestigious Ballon d’Or award.
After 21 years of dominating world football, the two legends are making way for a new generation of stars to compete for the coveted prize.
Messi, who has won a record-breaking eight Ballon d’Ors, including last year’s award after his World Cup triumph with Argentina, and Ronaldo, a five-time winner, were both left off the shortlist.
This marks the first time since 2003 that neither has been in contention.
Ronaldo was absent from last year’s nominations following his move to Saudi Arabia’s Al Nassr, while Messi now plays in the MLS with Inter Miami.
During their reign, only Luka Modric (2018) and Karim Benzema (2022) managed to break their stronghold on the award.
With both Messi and Ronaldo now playing outside Europe, the stage is set for fresh talent to shine.
The 30-man shortlist announced features a host of emerging stars, including England internationals Declan Rice, Bukayo Saka, Harry Kane, Jude Bellingham, Phil Foden, and Cole Palmer.
Kylian Mbappe, who finished third last year, also returns to the list, alongside Erling Haaland, who had another incredible season, winning the Premier League Golden Boot.
Real Madrid’s Vinicius Jr. is a strong contender after playing a key role in his team’s success in La Liga and the Champions League, while Bellingham is also in the mix after an impressive season with Los Blancos.
Spain’s Euro 2024 winners Lamine Yamal and Nico Williams are among the new faces on the list, along with Granit Xhaka and the recently retired Toni Kroos.
Though Messi is absent, his Argentine teammates Emiliano Martinez and Lautaro Martinez have been recognized following their Copa America victory.
The Ballon d’Or ceremony will take place on October 28.
