Spain’s former football federation president, Luis Rubiales, has been convicted of sexual assault after kissing player Jenni Hermoso without her consent.
Rubiales resigned in September 2023 amid increasing pressure, following a suspension by FIFA and a formal investigation by Spanish prosecutors.
The High Court in Spain has ordered him to pay a fine of €10,800 (£8,942). Rubiales was acquitted of coercion charges, which alleged that he attempted to pressure Hermoso into publicly stating the kiss was consensual.
The incident occurred during the celebrations after Spain’s victory over England in the 2023 Women’s World Cup, when Rubiales grabbed Hermoso by the head and kissed her on the lips.
The act led to widespread protests and calls for Rubiales to resign. He has since announced his intention to appeal the verdict.
In addition to the fine, Rubiales has been banned from approaching Hermoso within a 200-meter radius or communicating with her for one year, according to the court’s statement.
Rubiales, who previously claimed that Hermoso had consented to the kiss, described the act as “spontaneous” and an “act of affection.”
Hermoso, however, testified that she did not give consent and felt the incident “stained one of the happiest days of my life.”
She emphasized that such behavior was unacceptable in any professional or social setting, asserting that only she should decide who can kiss her.
The conviction of Luis Rubiales for sexual assault marks a significant moment in the ongoing fight against such misconduct in sports.
