President John Dramani Mahama has pledged to fully implement the findings of the investigative report on election-related violence during the 2020 and 2024 general elections, including the provision of adequate compensation to victims.

The President made the commitment during a courtesy call by the leadership of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) at the Jubilee House.

The GJA delegation, led by its President, Albert Kwabena Dwumfuor, presented a number of concerns to the President, including issues of journalist safety during elections.

President Mahama disclosed that he had recently received the comprehensive investigative report detailing the victims of the election violence and the circumstances surrounding each incident.

“Last week, I received the investigative report on the two incidents. It details and catalogues everyone who was affected by the violence and the circumstances that led to it,” the President said.

He further revealed that the report has been submitted to the Attorney-General for review.

“We have handed it over to the Attorney-General. The Attorney-General will review it and, where necessary, hold people culpable and bring them to book,” he added.

The President said the government is committed to ensuring justice and fairness for all victims, including the families of those who lost their lives and individuals who sustained injuries. He tasked the Attorney-General to determine adequate compensation for all affected persons.

“What is the adequate compensation that we can give to people like that?” he asked, emphasizing the importance of fair redress.

President Mahama also noted that the violence affected not only political activists and innocent bystanders but also journalists who were performing their professional duties.

The pledge signals the government’s intent to address impunity and promote accountability in electoral processes going forward.
