The Ghana Police Service has announced a series of temporary road closures, traffic diversions, and parking arrangements in Accra ahead of the state funeral for the victims of the recent military helicopter crash.
The inter-denominational and inter-faith ceremony is scheduled to take place on Friday, August 15, 2025, at Independence Square (Black Star Square). The event is expected to draw large crowds, including dignitaries, security personnel, and members of the public, prompting extensive traffic management measures to ensure safety and order.
Road Closures
The following roads will be closed to vehicular traffic for the duration of the ceremony:
28th February Road: From CEPS Traffic Light Intersection to Castle Road Junction
Lokko Street: Closed at Osu Cemetery Traffic Light
Castle Road: From African Union (AU) Circle to Osu Cemetery Traffic Light
Starlet 91 Road: Closed at the Ministries Traffic Light Intersection
Traffic Diversions
Motorists are advised to take alternative routes as follows:
Traffic from La, Labone, and Osu heading towards the Central Business District and Ministries via 28th February Road will be diverted onto Salem Avenue Road at the Castle Traffic Light, then link to Oxford Street.
Vehicles from Lokko Street in Osu heading towards Castle Road should use Ajumaku Street and Oxford Street instead.
Traffic from John Evans Atta Mills High Street towards Black Star Square will be redirected to Liberia Road at the CEPS Traffic Intersection, continuing toward the National Theatre area.
Vehicles from the AU Circle bound for Castle Road via Osu Cemetery Traffic Light will be rerouted through Abdul Diouf and King Hassan Roads, connecting to Abdul Nasser Road near the Ghana Institute of Journalism (GIJ).
Parking Arrangements
Access to designated parking zones will be restricted to vehicles displaying RED VVIP windscreen entry stickers. Approved parking areas include:
Black Star Square (VVIP and VIP zones)
Forecourt of the State House
International Conference Centre
Access Bank Car Park
Osu Cemetery Car Park
Accra Sports Stadium Car Park
Ministries Area
Ministry of Food and Agriculture Car Park

Strict Enforcement and Towing Operations
The Police Service has cautioned that vehicles found parked in unauthorized areas or attempting to enter restricted zones without proper clearance will be towed. Towing and recovery trucks will be on standby throughout the event.
Authorities are urging the public, particularly motorists, to comply with all traffic directives and cooperate with police and security personnel to ensure the smooth and dignified conduct of the state funeral.
