A new chapter in South-South cooperation is unfolding as Ghana and Colombia seal a historic maritime agreement aimed at strengthening trade links across the Atlantic.

The deal will establish direct shipping routes between the Port of Tema and the Port of Cartagena, positioning both countries as key gateways for commerce between Africa and Latin America.

Announcing the agreement in Bogotá, Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa described the development as a major milestone in Ghana’s international trade strategy.

Colombia’s Vice President, Francia Elena Márquez Mina, was instrumental in pushing the initiative forward, while Foreign Minister Rosa Yolanda Villavicencio was praised for her role in finalising the agreement.

Beyond its economic potential, officials say the partnership carries deep historical significance—transforming an ocean route once tied to the transatlantic slave trade into a bridge for modern-day collaboration, opportunity, and shared growth.
