Italy’s hopes of retaining their European Championship title were dashed as they suffered a 2-0 defeat to Switzerland in the round of 16 on Saturday.
Goals from Remo Freuler and Ruben Vargas in each half secured Switzerland’s victory, marking their first win over Italy in 31 years and propelling them into a quarterfinal clash against either England or Slovakia in Düsseldorf on July 6.
Italy’s exit from the tournament marks the third consecutive Euro that the defending champion has been eliminated in the round of 16, following Portugal in 2021 and Spain in 2016.
Switzerland, who hadn’t defeated Italy since 1993, celebrated only their ninth win in 62 encounters between the two teams.
Switzerland dominated the match statistically, leading in possession, shots, attacks, and passes.
