International Affairs Analyst and the Executive Director of The Bright Future Alliance (TBFA), Bright Ofori, has called on the African Union to take decisive action against countries that recognize Somaliland, warning that such moves threaten regional stability.

In a post shared on X (formerly Twitter), Mr. Ofori urged the AU to move beyond statements and adopt stricter measures, including severing ties with nations that officially or unofficially acknowledge Somaliland as an independent state.

“The African Union must sever ties with any country that recognizes Somaliland… Enough of the statements, act now,” he wrote.

He further argued that any recognition of Somaliland goes against the principles of the AU and could destabilize the Horn of Africa region.

His comments follow a statement issued by the AU Commission on April 19, 2026, in Addis Ababa, where the continental body expressed deep concern and strongly condemned reports that Israel intends to appoint a diplomatic envoy to Somaliland.

The continental body has consistently maintained that it does not recognize Somaliland and upholds the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Somalia.

The issue continues to generate reactions across Africa, with some supporting calls for firm action while others stress the need for diplomatic engagement to manage the situation.
