As the country gears up for the upcoming elections, Numo Blafo Amotia Omastu III, a member of the National Peace Council has called for urgent efforts to combat the rising threat of hate speech.
Speaking at the 2024 National Election Conference, he emphasized the critical role of maintaining peace and unity during the election season, urging political parties, media and citizens to promote responsible discourse.
“Hate speech, misinformation and disinformation has become widespread in recent times. As we gear up for this year’s elections, the need to tackle the spread of fake news and manipulative information has never been more pressing” he noted.
According to him, hate speech does not only contribute to a toxic political environment, but also undermines the principles of democracy.

Numo Blafo in his closing remarks called on all to stand united in upholding the principles of democracy inorder to ensure a peaceful election in December.
The call comes as concerns grow over the potential for inflammatory language to incite violence and disrupt national harmony.
