The Electoral Commission (EC) has announced that a by-election will be held in the Akwatia Constituency on Tuesday, September 2, 2025, following the death of the sitting Member of Parliament, Ernest Kumi.
In a statement signed by EC Chairperson Jean Mensa, the Commission confirmed that the seat had become officially vacant in accordance with Article 112(5) of the 1992 Constitution, which mandates a by-election within 60 days of such a vacancy.
Nomination Process
Prospective candidates are to submit their nomination forms between Monday, August 11 and Wednesday, August 13, 2025, at the EC’s Denkyembour District Office. Submission hours are 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. daily.
The filing fee is GHC10,000, with a discounted fee of GHC7,500 for female candidates and persons with disabilities (PWDs).
The EC has urged all political parties, aspirants, and the public to strictly adhere to the nomination guidelines and timelines, reaffirming its commitment to a free, fair, and transparent electoral process.
