An Accra Circuit Court presided over by Her Ladyship Sedinam Awo Kwadam has granted bail in the sum of GHS13 million to each of four individuals charged in connection with an attempted cocaine trafficking operation at the Kotoka International Airport’s Swissport cargo terminal.
The accused are facing charges of conspiracy to commit a crime and possession of narcotic drugs without lawful authority.
The facts of the case indicate that on Wednesday, April 23, 2025, security officers at the Export Section of the Swissport Cargo Terminal intercepted three suspicious wooden boxes during a routine inspection of outbound cargo destined for Brussels, Belgium. Upon closer examination, the officers discovered hidden compartments containing 73 compressed slabs of a whitish substance. A preliminary test of the material returned a positive result for cocaine.
The four suspects were arrested the same day and handed over to the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) for further investigation. All have denied any knowledge of the illicit cargo.
As part of the strict bail conditions, each accused person must provide four sureties—one of whom must justify the bail with a landed property worth at least GHS1 million. All sureties are required to be civil servants earning a minimum net monthly salary of GHS5,000.
Additionally, the court has barred the accused from acquiring new passports and ordered NACOC to collect their biodata for submission to passport offices nationwide to ensure they are flagged in any future passport applications. The suspects have also been instructed to surrender any existing passports to the court registry.
To prevent any attempt to flee, the court has placed the accused on a stop list at all exit points of the country. They are prohibited from leaving the jurisdiction without prior approval from the court and must report to NACOC twice each week as investigations continue.
