The Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has paid a courtesy visit to His Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene, at the Manhyia Palace, to convey Parliament’s condolences following the passing of the Asantehemaa, Nana Konadu Yiadom III.

The visit took place on Wednesday, October 15, 2025, as the Speaker was unable to attend the final funeral rites of the late Queen Mother.

He led a high-level parliamentary delegation, including Second Deputy Speaker Hon. Andrew Asiamah Amoako, Majority Chief Whip Hon. Rockson-Nelson Etse Dafeamekpor, Deputy Minority Leader Hon. Patricia Appeagyei, Clerk to Parliament Mr. Ebenezer Ahuma Djietror, and senior staff of the Parliamentary Service.

In his tribute, Rt. Hon. Bagbin described the late Asantehemaa as a “revered matriarch” whose grace, wisdom, and moral authority impacted not only Asanteman, but also the wider Ghanaian society.

“The passing of the Asantehemaa is not only a great loss to Asanteman but to the entire nation. Her counsel and dignity enriched our collective identity as Ghanaians,” he said.

He praised her unwavering commitment to tradition and mentorship, noting that her legacy would remain an integral part of Ghana’s cultural heritage.

The Speaker also reaffirmed Parliament’s dedication to promoting peace, legislative reform, and inclusive national development.

In response, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II expressed deep appreciation for the gesture and Parliament’s continued support during a difficult period for the Ashanti Kingdom.

He commended the institution’s role in Ghana’s democratic governance and urged Members of Parliament to remain steadfast in their duties to the nation.

As a symbol of goodwill and cultural recognition, the Asantehene pledged to donate a newly handwoven kente cloth to replace the current one adorning the Debating Chamber of Parliament. The existing fabric, also a royal gift, has adorned the chamber for over two decades.

This renewed gesture, the Asantehene noted, reflects his desire to preserve and promote Ghanaian culture within national institutions.

Parliament is scheduled to reconvene on Tuesday, October 21, to resume legislative business in pursuit of national development and the aspirations of the Ghanaian people.
