Former Finance Minister Mohammed Amin Adam has dismissed claims that his administration enforced the controversial betting tax, insisting that the policy was never implemented.
His response follows the presentation of the 2025 Budget Statement and Economic Policy by Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, who announced the abolition of several taxes, including the Betting Tax and E-Levy.
Speaking at a press conference held by the Minority, Dr. Amin Adam described the claim as misleading, arguing that the tax was never collected under his tenure.
“The so-called Betting Tax they claim to have abolished was never implemented. To tell Ghanaians you have scrapped a tax that was never enforced is simply deceptive,” he stated.
The betting tax, introduced under the previous government, proposed a 10% withholding tax on winnings from sports betting and lottery.
Despite facing strong opposition from industry stakeholders and the public, Dr. Amin Adam maintains that his administration did not enforce the policy before leaving office.
