In a unified response to tariffs imposed on African countries by the United States, African Trade Ministers across Africa are set to meet today, Monday, April 14, 2025, to deliberate on the new tariffs announced by US President Donald Trump.
Although President Trump has suspended the implementation of the tariffs, the Secretary General of the African Continental Free Trade Area, Wamkele Mene, said that the move is a wake-up call for Africa.
Wamkele Mene argued that it is time for all African nations to fully embrace intra-Africa trade.
“The president of the United States has given a wake-up call, and that is that we must accelerate our self-sufficiency. The ministers of trade will meet on April 14 to deliberate on exactly how our continent should respond,” he stated.
