Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has received a major boost in his campaign to lead the New Patriotic Party (NPP) into the 2028 general elections, following the open endorsement of 15 out of the 23 NPP Members of Parliament in the Eastern Region.

The endorsement was officially announced on Wednesday, September 24, during the first day of Dr. Bawumia’s two-day campaign tour of the region.

Speaking on behalf of the group, Achiase MP Kofi Ahenkorah Marfo said their support was based on a firm belief that Dr. Bawumia possesses the ideal combination of experience, vision, and broad appeal needed to secure victory for the party in 2028.

According to him, the MPs are clear in their minds that Dr. Bawumia is the best candidate to lead the NPP to success in the next presidential election.

The MPs argued that Dr. Bawumia stands out as the most marketable candidate, citing his track record as Vice President and his demonstrated ability to unite people across political and social divides.

They described him as Ghana’s most impactful Vice President and a candidate who, both politically and policy-wise, presents the strongest opportunity for the NPP to win the upcoming election.

In addition to his competence, the MPs highlighted Dr. Bawumia’s character as central to their decision, describing him as humble, effective, and inclusive—qualities they believe Ghanaians want in their next leader. They stressed the need for a unifying figure, warning that division within the party could be politically costly.

On the policy front, the MPs defended Bawumia’s past initiatives, many of which they say have begun yielding results despite initial criticism. They argued that replacing him as the party’s flagbearer would risk derailing the party’s progress and resetting its momentum.

Referring to the fallout from the 2024 elections, they said more Ghanaians are now warming up to Bawumia’s ideas, and any change in direction would be equivalent to setting the party back by another 16 years.

The MPs pledged their unwavering commitment to his campaign and vowed to mobilise support across the Eastern Region to ensure his victory in the NPP primaries. They called on party members to remain resolute and support his candidacy, stating that they are ready to work hard to secure his nomination.

Dr. Bawumia faces internal competition from several prominent figures in the NPP, including former General Secretary Kwabena Agyepong, former Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong, Abetifi MP Bryan Acheampong, and former Education Minister Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum.

The 15 MPs who have declared their support for Dr. Bawumia include Ida Adwoa Asiedu (Ayensuano), Korkor Asante (Atiwa West), Kojo Oppong Nkrumah (Ofoase Ayirebi), Frank Annoh Dompreh (Nsawam Adoagyiri), Sammi Awuku (Akuapem North), Kofi Okyere Baafi (New Juaben South), Akwasi Acquah (Oda), Kingsley Agyemang (Abuakwa South), Nana Ampaw Addo-Frempong (Abuakwa North), Kwame Appiah Kodua (Fanteakwa North), Duke Ofori-Atta (Fanteakwa South), Frank Asiedu Bekoe (Suhum), Charles Asuako Owiredu (Abirem), Kingsley Ahenkora Marfo (Achiase), and Alex Agyare (Kade).
