Canal+ and MultiChoice Ghana have announced a new DStv pricing model that lowers subscription fees, with the cheapest package costing GH¢50 monthly, as part of efforts to make pay television more affordable and tackle illegal access to content.
The revised structure replaces the existing six packages with four options: Starter at GH¢50, Select at GH¢100, Sports at GH¢250 and Ultimate at GH¢570 per month.
The changes follow discussions between the two companies and the Ministry of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations over the cost of television services in Ghana.
The agreement was unveiled at a joint press briefing in Accra on Monday, October 26, 2026, where officials also outlined plans to strengthen the fight against content piracy.
Communication Minister Samuel Nartey George said the government’s involvement was intended to ensure that more households could afford legitimate television services.
He explained that the administration was also preparing to address illegal streaming platforms and unauthorised digital decoders, commonly referred to as ghost boxes.
According to the Minister, the government is awaiting legal guidance from the Attorney-General’s Department before beginning a major enforcement exercise.
He added that the National Communications Authority and the Cyber Security Authority had examined proposed technical interventions, including blocking internet protocol addresses linked to illegal streaming services.
A joint committee involving the ministry, the two companies, the NCA, National Security, Customs and other relevant institutions will coordinate the implementation of the anti-piracy measures.
WHAT SUBSCRIBERS WILL GET
MultiChoice Ghana Country Chief Executive Officer Alex Okyere said the new arrangement was designed to streamline the available packages while giving customers access to content at different price points.
The Starter package, priced at GH¢50, will feature 90 channels covering selected entertainment, films, children’s programmes and free-to-air stations, alongside all La Liga matches.
The Select package will cost GH¢100 per month and provide 123 channels.
For sports enthusiasts, the GH¢250 Sports package will include the company’s full football offering, covering competitions such as the English Premier League and UEFA Champions League. Mr Okyere said the same football offering currently costs GH¢563 monthly.
The top-tier Ultimate package will be priced at GH¢570, down from GH¢854 for the existing Premium package. It will also feature premium sporting events involving Formula One, golf, tennis, MotoGP and rugby.
Mr Okyere emphasised that the revised prices were permanent and not part of a limited-time discount campaign.
CANAL+ TARGETS ILLEGAL CONTENT DISTRIBUTION
Canal+ Executive Vice-President for Public Affairs in the Rest of Africa, Dr Keabetswe Modimoeng, said the new pricing arrangement emerged from continued engagement with the government and reflected opportunities arising from the Canal+ and MultiChoice merger.
He cautioned that illegal access to television content posed a financial threat to the creative sector, depriving professionals such as producers, actors, costume designers and make-up artists of earnings from their work.
