EOCO explains attempted arrest of Manhyia South MP

The Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) says its officers moved to arrest the Manhyia South Member of Parliament, Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, at the High Court premises on Wednesday.

The attempted arrest was linked to an ongoing investigation after the MP allegedly failed to respond to invitations from the anti-graft agency.

EOCO, in a statement issued on Wednesday, September 23, 2026, said the operation was eventually called off after officers determined that continuing with the arrest could pose a threat to public safety.

The incident was captured on video by journalists who were present at the court complex.

The agency said Baffour Awuah was invited twice in February to assist with investigations but did not appear before investigators.

It said subsequent measures were taken to secure his attendance, with Wednesday’s operation forming part of those efforts.

EOCO has also disclosed that two individuals who allegedly intervened during the attempted arrest have been identified.

The agency said it is examining their actions in relation to the events captured on video.

EOCO indicated that, after completing its assessment, it would determine whether further legal action was necessary.

The agency further confirmed that the MP later proceeded to the precincts of Parliament, which is currently on recess.

EOCO said it remains mindful of the constitutional privileges and immunities afforded Members of Parliament and will conduct its activities within the limits of the law.

However, the agency maintained that being a Member of Parliament does not, in itself, prevent an investigation from continuing or exempt an individual from lawful processes.

EOCO said it would, nonetheless, ensure that any action it takes does not infringe on parliamentary privilege or other protections guaranteed by the Constitution.

The agency said the investigation involving Baffour Awuah remains active.

EOCO added that it is reviewing the events surrounding the attempted arrest, including video footage available to investigators, before deciding on its next course of action.
