Manchester United have completed the signing of Carlos Baleba from Brighton & Hove Albion, giving their midfield another major boost. The 22 year old has signed a five year contract, with United paying £65 million plus up to £5 million in add-ons.
Baleba arrives at Old Trafford with a growing reputation and 92 Premier League appearances for Brighton. His arrival also adds to a midfield rebuild that includes fellow new signings Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans.
For Baleba, the move is more than a career step. It is the fulfilment of a long-held ambition, with the Cameroon international describing United as “the club of my dreams.”
“Playing at Old Trafford is always special but the opportunity to do so as a Manchester United player will be a real honour,” Baleba said.
The move also carries an interesting twist. United explored a deal for Baleba last summer, but walked away after Brighton valued him at more than £100 million. The club had concerns over paying more than the £115 million Chelsea agreed for Moisés Caicedo in 2023.
A year later, United have secured their man for a lower initial fee. That makes the deal look even more significant as the club continue to reshape their squad.
Baleba brings power, energy and Premier League experience to the midfield. His ability to cover ground and compete in the centre of the pitch could give United greater balance, while his age leaves room for further development.
Director of football Jason Wilcox believes the midfielder can add something different. “Carlos is an elite midfielder with immense potential to develop further,” Wilcox said.
The next challenge is turning potential into consistent performances under Michael Carrick. Baleba is already eager to begin, saying Carrick’s “experience and knowledge of the game” can help him reach the highest level.
