Coventry City have made a bold statement ahead of their Premier League return by signing Ghana midfielder Caleb Yirenkyi from FC Nordsjaelland. The 20-year-old has joined Frank Lampard’s side on a long-term contract in a club-record deal.
Reports put the fee at €27 million (£23.1m), with another €3m (£2.5m) possible in add-ons. It is a huge investment in a player who has already made a name for himself in Denmark and with the Black Stars.
Yirenkyi arrives after a standout 2025-26 campaign. He played 34 times as Nordsjaelland finished third in the Danish Superliga and secured a place in the UEFA Conference League.
His individual rise was just as impressive. Yirenkyi was named the Superliga Young Player of the Year and earned a place in the league’s Team of the Year.
His journey began at Ghana’s Right to Dream academy. He moved to Nordsjaelland in 2024 and made his senior debut that September at just 18.
The midfielder has since become a versatile player. He can operate in midfield and has also played at right-back for both club and country.
His international rise has been rapid. Yirenkyi has earned 15 Ghana caps and starred at the 2026 World Cup, where he scored a stoppage-time winner against Panama.
Now comes a new test. Coventry are back in the top flight after a 25-year absence, and Yirenkyi will face the speed and pressure of Premier League football for the first time.
“When I spoke to the Head Coach about the plans and the style, it’s something I really like,” Yirenkyi said. “I look forward to learning from him.”
He also has his eyes on the fans. “I’ve also heard a lot about the fans, they’re incredible and I can’t wait to play in front of them.”
For Lampard, the signing is both an investment and a statement. Coventry are not simply returning to the Premier League, they are building for it, and Yirenkyi could become one of the faces of that new era.
