Real Madrid have ended months of speculation by tying Vinicius Junior to a new long-term contract until 2032. The Brazilian winger has rejected interest from Arsenal, choosing to continue his journey at the Santiago Bernabeu as the club enters a new era under Jose Mourinho.
The breakthrough came after positive talks between Vinicius and Real Madrid officials at the club’s training ground on Wednesday. His previous deal was due to expire next summer, making this one of the club’s biggest priorities. Madrid described the 26-year-old as “one of the most important players in one of the most successful periods in our history.”
For Arsenal, the announcement closes the door on an ambitious transfer pursuit. The Premier League champions viewed Vinicius as their dream signing on the left wing and were prepared to make a major move if he became available. Instead, Mikel Arteta’s side must now turn their attention elsewhere.
Vinicius’ decision also provides stability during a summer of major change in Madrid. Jose Mourinho has returned as head coach, while several new arrivals have reshaped the squad. The Portuguese manager made it clear he wanted Vinicius to remain one of the centrepieces of his new project.
The numbers explain why Madrid fought so hard to keep him. Since arriving from Flamengo in 2018, Vinicius has made 375 appearances, scored 128 goals and provided 100 assists. He has helped the club win three La Liga titles and two UEFA Champions League crowns, cementing his place among the world’s elite attackers.
The new contract also offers both opportunity and pressure. Vinicius was criticised by sections of the Bernabeu support during a trophyless campaign last season, meaning expectations will be even higher. His first season under Mourinho could shape both Madrid’s title ambitions and his own legacy.
Speaking after returning for pre-season, Vinicius sounded ready for the challenge. “(I’m) very well, getting to know the new manager, the new players, and working really hard in training,” he said. “(Mourinho) wants me to be just as I’ve always been: happy, positive, and playing my own style of football.”
