For a moment, football held its breath once again. Christian Eriksen’s collapse during Denmark’s friendly against Ukraine brought back painful memories of Euro 2020, but this time the outcome was far more reassuring, with the midfielder confirming he is recovering well at home with his family.

The Wolfsburg midfielder sparked concern when he clutched his chest and fell to the turf in the 65th minute of Sunday’s match in Odense. Medical staff rushed to his aid, and the game was later abandoned as attention turned from football to the well-being of one of the sport’s most admired figures.

Thankfully, Eriksen’s update brought relief across the football world.

“I want to let everyone know that I am doing well and that I am home with my family,” he wrote on Instagram. The 34-year-old also stressed that the incident was different from the cardiac arrest he suffered during Denmark’s European Championship match against Finland in 2021.

That moment in Copenhagen remains one of football’s most emotional scenes. Eriksen received life-saving CPR on the pitch before beginning a remarkable recovery that eventually brought him back to elite football.

His latest scare was linked to the implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) fitted after that incident. Eriksen revealed the device worked exactly as intended.

“Thanks to their expertise, my ICD did exactly what it was designed to do: protect me when I needed it,” he said.

The midfielder also thanked teammates, medical staff, and the doctors who have monitored his health over the years. His words reflected both gratitude and perspective after another unexpected challenge.

Eriksen’s journey since 2021 has been one of football’s most inspiring stories. Forced to leave Inter Milan because of Italian regulations regarding ICD devices, he rebuilt his career with Brentford before enjoying a successful spell at Manchester United.

He made 107 appearances for United, winning both the Carabao Cup and FA Cup before joining Wolfsburg in 2025.

For now, football comes second. “I am feeling good, and my recovery has already started,” Eriksen said. “For now, my focus is on recovering, spending time with my family, going on vacation, and playing football with my children.”
