President John Mahama has directed the National Investigation Bureau (NIB) to investigate alleged improprieties in the award of overseas scholarships following claims that money was paid to secure a study opportunity abroad.

The directive was disclosed by the Minister in charge of Government Communications, Felix Ofosu Kwakye, who said the President’s attention was drawn to the matter after a radio discussion on Sompa FM.

During the programme, a former public official alleged that an individual had paid money in exchange for a foreign scholarship.

According to Mr Ofosu Kwakye, the allegation was made by Kofi Ofosu Nkansah, a former Chief Executive Officer of the National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Programme (NEIP), during a Twi-language broadcast that has since generated significant public interest.

The Minister said President Mahama considers the allegation serious and of grave public concern, particularly in light of the government’s stated commitment to transparency, integrity, and equal access to educational opportunities.

In a directive issued to the NIB, the President instructed the bureau to immediately investigate the matter, establish the factual basis of the claim, identify any individuals involved, and determine the veracity of the allegations.

“The Bureau has also been directed to submit its findings to the President for consideration and any appropriate action that may arise,” the directive stated.

The order was contained in a letter dated February 3, 2026, signed by Callistus Mahama, Secretary to the President, and addressed to the Director-General of the National Investigation Bureau.
