Former parliamentary candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for the Klottey Korle constituency, Valentino Nii Noi Nortey,  has been remanded into custody in the United States following an alleged domestic stabbing incident in Pennsylvania.

The Lower Paxton Township Police Department confirmed that the 41-year-old politician was arrested after an incident reported on the morning of Saturday, January 17, 2026.

Police said officers responded to a residence along Mayfair Drive in Harrisburg at about 10 a.m., where they found a woman with multiple stab wounds.

Emergency responders transported the victim to a nearby hospital for treatment. In a statement issued on Monday, police said the woman is in stable condition, describing the incident as an isolated domestic matter and stressing that there was no threat to the public.

Investigators reportedly spent several hours at the residence processing the scene for forensic evidence.

Mr Nortey has since been charged with criminal attempt to commit homicide, possession of an instrument of crime with intent to use, and tampering with or fabricating physical evidence, according to the Lower Paxton Township Bureau of Police.

Online court records indicate that he was arraigned before Magisterial District Judge David Judy. Given the seriousness of the charges, particularly the attempted homicide count, the court denied him bail.

Mr Nortey gained national attention in Ghana during the 2016 and 2020 general elections, where he contested the highly competitive Klottey Korle parliamentary seat. He has remained a recognisable figure within the NPP, including among party supporters in the Ghanaian diaspora in the United States.

The arrest has sparked concern within NPP circles both in Ghana and abroad. The party has yet to issue an official statement on the matter, though the development is seen as a significant setback as the party prepares for its internal flagbearer contest later this month.

Mr Nortey is currently being held at the Dauphin County Prison. A preliminary hearing has been scheduled for January 26, 2026, to determine whether there is sufficient evidence for the case to proceed to the Court of Common Pleas.
