Members of pressure group Arise Ghana on Tuesday, January 20, 2026, staged a protest at the United States Embassy in Accra, demanding the return of former Minister of Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta, to Ghana to face what they describe as accountability processes.

The demonstrators, gathered outside the embassy premises, calling on U.S. authorities to collaborate with Ghanaian institutions to facilitate Mr. Ofori-Atta’s return.

The group is insisting that no public official should be shielded from justice.

According to the group, the protest was aimed at reinforcing their demand that the former finance minister return to Ghana to answer questions over his stewardship, stressing that accountability must apply equally to all.

A member of Arise Ghana and PNC Flagbearer, Bernard Monah, said the group would sustain the protest until concrete steps are taken by U.S. authorities to ensure Mr. Ofori-Atta’s return.

He alleged that the former finance minister had overstayed his visa after travelling to the United States for medical treatment and had no intention of returning to Ghana.

Bernard Monah explained that although the group initially planned an indefinite protest, an agreement was reached with the police to demonstrate daily from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. for two weeks, after which they intend to escalate their action if their demands are not met.

Meanwhile, the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has reportedly indicated that Ken Ofori-Atta overstayed his visitor visa and has consequently lost his legal status to remain in the United States.
