Elina Svitolina arrived in Auckland searching for rhythm and reassurance. She left with silverware, belief, and momentum after lifting the ASB Classic to claim the 19th WTA title of her career. It was a victory that felt personal as much as professional.
Top seed Svitolina defeated China’s Wang Xinyu 6-3, 7-6 (8-6) in a tense final that tested both nerve and patience. The Ukrainian controlled the first set before surviving a tight second, sealing the match on her second championship point. The crowd stayed locked in until the final serve landed.
This win carried added weight. Auckland marked Svitolina’s first tournament since she stepped away from the tour in September to take a mental health break. “It definitely feels amazing to win another title, especially after a not very pleasant end of year for me,” she said. “That break really helped me to regroup and come back with a new energy.”
The context made it sweeter. Svitolina had reached this final last year, only to lose to Coco Gauff in three sets. This time, she finished the job, supported courtside all week by her husband Gael Monfils, the defending men’s champion in Auckland. “This one was very special,” Svitolina added, referencing Monfils’ success at the same event.
On court, the match offered sharp contrasts. Svitolina relied on depth and discipline, while Wang mixed power with touch, using drop shots and net play to stay close. Wang’s resistance pushed the final into a tiebreak that swung on fine margins and big serves.
The decisive moments showed Svitolina’s experience. She saved early pressure, stayed calm after losing a championship point, and struck when the opening came. It was the composure of a player who has been here before.
Wang, playing her first WTA Tour final, left with pride rather than regret. “I want to say thank you to my team,” she said. “I’ve had some injuries in the past year, and the people around me matter the most.”
For Svitolina, the focus now shifts to Melbourne. She will face Amanda Anisimova in an exhibition match before the Australian Open.
