The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has honoured the memory of its founder and Ghana’s first president of the Fourth Republic, Flight Lieutenant Jerry John Rawlings, on the fifth anniversary of his death.
In a statement signed by the party’s Director of Communications, Kakra Essamuah, the NDC hailed the late leader as a towering figure whose impact on Ghana’s political and social development remains profound and enduring.
“As the party, the nation, and his numerous admirers worldwide remember him for his sterling contributions to the development and welfare of our people, we in the NDC remain assured that absolutely nothing will erase his legacy from the history of Ghana,” the statement said.
The party also expressed grief over the recent passing of former First Lady Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings, noting that she is yet to receive the full honours of a befitting farewell for her service to the nation.
While reflecting on the five years since Rawlings’ death, the NDC described the period as “five long years of mourning and sorrow” for the party.
“Comrade President, Chairman Rawlings, continue to rest peacefully in the bosom of the Lord,” the statement concluded.
Jerry John Rawlings, who first came to power as a military leader before becoming a democratically elected president, is remembered for his instrumental role in Ghana’s political transition and for laying the foundation of the Fourth Republic.
