The Health Facilities Regulatory Agency (HeFRA) has ordered the immediate closure of Tamale Technical University Hospital in Ghana. Inspectors found serious safety and hygiene problems, including poor infection control and lack of proper medical licenses.

HeFRA said the hospital must address these issues before reopening. Patients are being redirected to nearby hospitals while the hospital undergoes inspections and repairs.

Officials highlighted that hospital safety is crucial, especially after the COVID-19 pandemic showed how quickly infections can spread in poorly managed facilities. Staff at Tamale Technical University Hospital have been instructed to halt all services until the agency confirms the hospital meets health and safety standards.

The closure has caused concern among students and staff, as the hospital serves both patients and medical training programs. University leaders said they are cooperating with authorities and have started reviewing the hospital’s management and safety protocols.

Experts say this move shows Ghana is serious about patient safety. Hospitals must not compromise hygiene or security, and regular inspections will help prevent accidents and infections in the future. This is also a lesson for other hospitals to maintain high standards to protect both patients and staff.
