The Appointments Committee of Parliament will today, Monday, November 10, 2025, vet Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie for the position of Chief Justice.

The session, scheduled to begin at 11:00 a.m., follows his nomination by President John Dramani Mahama.

An official notice issued by David Sebastian Damoah, Director of Media Relations at Parliament, confirmed the proceedings. Justice Baffoe-Bonnie’s nomination comes after the dismissal of Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, who had served as Chief Justice since 2023.

During the vetting, Members of Parliament are expected to assess his qualifications, judicial philosophy, and vision for strengthening Ghana’s justice system before forwarding their recommendation to the plenary for approval.

Meanwhile, Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin on Friday, November 7, dismissed a motion filed by Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin seeking to suspend the vetting. The Minority Leader had argued that the process should be deferred until court cases involving the former Chief Justice are concluded, citing constitutional and procedural concerns.

However, the Speaker ruled that there was no constitutional or procedural justification for halting parliamentary work due to ongoing judicial matters, warning that doing so could set a dangerous precedent.
