Ryan Garcia, the 25-year-old boxing sensation, has been handed a significant blow as the New York State Athletic Commission imposed a one-year ban following his failed drugs test.

The test revealed the presence of the banned substance ostarine, detected in two separate screenings conducted before his anticipated bout with Devin Haney on 20 April.

As a result of this ruling, Garcia’s victory against Haney has been nullified, marking it as a no-contest match.

This decision also restores Haney’s undefeated record in professional boxing. Alongside the ban, Garcia is required to forfeit his substantial £950,000 ($1.2m) contract purse from the Haney fight and pay a £7,900 ($10,000) fine.

Garcia vehemently denied intentionally using the banned substance, attributing the positive test to “contamination” from a tainted supplement.

In response to the ban, Garcia, who had previously hinted at retirement, expressed his intention to return to boxing after the one-year suspension, reiterating his stance that he never engaged in cheating.

Despite this setback, Garcia remains a formidable force in the boxing world with only one defeat in his impressive 25-fight career, notably against Gervonta Davis in 2023.

He is widely recognized as one of the prominent stars in American boxing.

The failed drugs test and subsequent ban have sparked discussions in the boxing community, with Haney expressing gratitude to the commission for upholding fairness and transparency.

Haney, who now holds a record of 31 victories in 31 fights, extended an invitation to Garcia for a future rematch, emphasizing the importance of competing on a level playing field.

Ostarine, classified as a non-steroidal drug known for its muscle growth properties, has been banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency since 2008, underscoring the stringent regulations in professional sports to maintain integrity and fairness.
