The National Communications Authority (NCA) has suspended operations of three radio stations operated by Wontumi Multimedia Company Limited, owned by Bernard Antwi Boasiako—popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

The affected stations—95.9 FM in Accra, 101.3 FM in Kumasi, and 101.3 FM in Takoradi—were cited for multiple regulatory breaches, including unauthorised use of Studio-to-Transmitter Link (STL) frequencies and operating from transmitter locations not approved by the Authority.

The suspensions come after the expiration of a 30-day grace period granted by President John Dramani Mahama, allowing non-compliant broadcasters a window to address outstanding violations.

According to the NCA, Wontumi Multimedia failed to meet the conditions for compliance within the stipulated timeframe, prompting the regulatory action. The Authority said the move is in line with Regulation 54 of the Electronic Communications Regulations, 2011 (L.I. 1991), which prohibits the operation of broadcasting services without a valid Certificate of Compliance.

In addition to the Wontumi stations, six other radio outlets across the country have also had their operations suspended after they reportedly ignored or failed to resolve similar infractions during the amnesty period.

The NCA reaffirmed its commitment to upholding broadcasting standards, stating that it will intensify monitoring and enforcement activities to ensure all radio stations adhere to licensing and operational guidelines.

“This action is part of our broader efforts to sanitize the airwaves and ensure all broadcasters operate within the bounds of the law,” the Authority stated.
