Former Asante Kotoko goalkeeper Fredrick Asare has completed a move to Durban City FC, marking a fresh chapter in his career as the South African side prepares for life in the top flight.
Durban City confirmed Asare’s signing, as part of a wave of new arrivals following their promotion to the 2025–26 Betway Premiership. The 26-year-old Ghanaian shot-stopper joins alongside forward Trevor Mokwena and midfielder Brooklyn Poggenpoel. Veteran keeper Darren Keet also arrives to challenge Asare for the No. 1 jersey.
While the club has yet to reveal contract details, Asare’s arrival signals intent from Durban City. The club is building a squad capable of surviving and possibly thriving in South Africa’s top division. The competition for the starting goalkeeper position is set to be fierce.
Asare departed Kotoko after contract extension talks broke down. His time in Kumasi saw him lift the Ghana Premier League title and earn multiple call-ups to the Ghana national team. His performances often stood out for calmness under pressure and smart shot-stopping.
The move to Durban gives him a new platform, and for the club, it brings in top-flight experience and international pedigree. Durban City will need every ounce of that experience to compete with South African giants like Mamelodi Sundowns, who enter the season as defending champions.
For Asare, this is means more. It’s a test, an opportunity to prove himself in a new league. And for Ghanaian fans, it’s a moment of pride to see one of their own breaking ground in South Africa’s elite football scene.
