Mikel Arteta insists Arsenal handled everything correctly regarding Thomas Partey, following the midfielder’s recent rape and sexual assault charges.

Partey, who left the club at the end of June, was charged by the Crown Prosecution Service just days after his Arsenal contract expired. The charges involve five counts of rape and one count of sexual assault, reportedly involving three women between 2021 and 2022. Partey denies all allegations.

The Ghana international was first arrested in July 2022, which launched an investigation by the Metropolitan Police. The case was then handed over to the CPS in December 2024. During this time, Partey remained an active player at Arsenal.

Arsenal had shown interest in extending Partey’s contract earlier this year. Arteta, speaking in May, noted that the club valued his contributions on the pitch. However, the situation took a legal turn soon after.

When asked during Arsenal’s pre-season tour in Singapore, Arteta stood firm. “The club was very clear in its statement,” he said. “There are a lot of legal matters that are very complicated so I cannot comment on any of that.” When pressed further on the club’s conduct, he added, “100%.”

Arsenal also released a statement, stating: “The player’s contract ended on June 30. Due to ongoing legal proceedings, the club is unable to comment on the case.”

The case has raised questions about how clubs handle ongoing investigations involving their players. For now, Arsenal are focused on their preparations for the new season. But the situation remains delicate.

The mood around the club is mixed as some fans await clarity, others simply want to move forward. Arteta’s comments suggest confidence in Arsenal’s internal protocols. But the legal process will determine what comes next for Partey and how the club’s handling is ultimately judged.
