The Member of Parliament fpr the Akwatia Constituency, Hon. Ernest Yaw Kumi, has been confirmed dead.

The 40 year old MP, died on Monday July 7, 2025. The cause of his death is still unkown.

Ernest Yaw Kumi rose to political prominence in 2023 after winning the NPP primaries in Akwatia and later secured victory in the 2024 general elections. Sworn in on January 7, 2025, Kumi’s inauguration was not without controversy.

A High Court in Koforidua had placed an injunction on the swearing-in, leading to a subsequent contempt conviction and bench warrant issued against him.

However, on June 11, 2025, Ghana’s Supreme Court overturned the contempt ruling in a 4–1 decision, stating that Kumi’s right to a fair hearing had been violated. The ruling cleared the way for Kumi to fully engage in parliamentary duties without legal obstruction.

Known among his supporters as “Akwatia Star Boy,” Kumi has pledged to focus on job creation, infrastructure development, and education.

During his campaign, he received widespread grassroots support, including the donation of two vehicles from a fellow Adisadel College alumnus to boost his mobility across the constituency.

The news of his death has sent shockwaves down the spine of most Ghanaians especially his colleagues in Parliamnet.
