The University for Development Studies (UDS) have written their name into global football history. The Tamale-based institution became the first African university to win the FISU World University Football Tournament, pulling off a dramatic 2-1 comeback victory over Brazil’s Paulista University in Dalian, China. Their triumph, sealed in extra time, sparked national pride and earned presidential recognition back home.

President John Dramani Mahama hosted the champions at the Jubilee House, where he presented a GHC500,000 cash reward to celebrate their remarkable achievement. The players, staff, and officials were welcomed as heroes, carrying the glittering trophy that symbolised Africa’s breakthrough on the world university stage.

Mahama praised UDS for what he described as a reflection of his government’s “Reset Agenda,” commending their courage, discipline, and excellence. “From Tamale to the world stage, this perfectly embodies the spirit of the Reset Agenda; Ghana rising through discipline, opportunity, and excellence,” he said.

The President also announced plans to establish a School Sports Authority to strengthen the country’s sports development structure from the basic to university level. “We are setting up the School Sports Authority which will concentrate on sports from the basic level to the secondary level to the university level,” Mahama said, adding that government would continue to invest in youth sports pathways.

The victory itself was a story of grit and belief. UDS fell behind within 10 seconds of the final but fought back with remarkable resilience. Captain Mohammed Sulemana equalised deep into stoppage time before Ezedeen Alhassan’s thunderous header from a corner in extra time sealed an unforgettable win.

Their return to Accra was nothing short of euphoric. Fans, students, and alumni thronged Kotoka International Airport on Sunday, October 5, to welcome the world champions home. The celebrations captured the pride of a nation united by sport and inspired by the power of perseverance. For UDS, this triumph marks more than a football victory.
