On January 3, President Nana Akufo-Addo highlighted Ghana’s significant progress in sports infrastructure, emphasizing its importance in strengthening the country’s position as a leading sports hub in Africa.

Akufo-Addo pointed to the development of numerous AstroTurf pitches and the rehabilitation of existing sports facilities as key achievements.

“The construction of over 150 Astroturf pitches nationwide and the upgrade of various stadia have enhanced Ghana’s standing as a prime destination for international sports,” he remarked. “This is evident in our successful hosting of the 2023 All African Games.”

The country’s commitment to sports excellence was showcased during the 2024 African Games, held from March 8 to 23, where Ghana welcomed over 13,000 athletes and officials across ten venues.

The nation performed admirably, securing a total of 69 medals.

In preparation for the Games, the government invested roughly $195 million into infrastructure projects, including the construction of the Borteyman Sports Complex and the completion of the University of Ghana Stadium.

Despite these advancements, there were last-minute efforts to ready the Accra Sports Stadium for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.

In conclusion, President Akufo-Addo’s address underscores Ghana’s unwavering commitment to enhancing its sports infrastructure, a crucial step in solidifying the nation’s position as a key player in African sports.
