Ghana’s national men’s football team, the Black Stars, failed to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) after a dismal qualification campaign. The team lost 2-1 to Niger at the Accra Sports Stadium, capping off a winless run in six matches.
The Black Stars finished bottom of Group F with just three points, losing to Sudan and Angola. Kwasi Appiah, Ghana’s former coach, had led Sudan who were in the same group as Ghana to qualification, adding salt to the wound.
In a post-game press conference, Otto Addo apologized to Ghanaians for the team’s disappointing performance. “I am ready to apologize. I am so sorry that we did not do well and qualify. I am sorry because I know how it feels and how Ghanaians are hurt. I am so sorry.”
The Ghana Football Association (GFA) will meet much later in the week to discuss the Black Stars’ future and plan the next steps following the qualification setback.
