Medeama could hardly have asked for a tougher opening assignment. The Tarkwa based club will host five time African champions TP Mazembe at the TnA Stadium before travelling to the Democratic Republic of Congo for what promises to be a decisive second leg.
The tie is a major test of Medeama’s ambition. After lifting the Ghana Premier League title, the Mauve and Yellow have earned another chance to compete among Africa’s elite. Beating a club with Mazembe’s pedigree would send a strong message that the Ghanaian champions are ready to challenge the continent’s traditional powers.
The reward for victory is another demanding hurdle. Medeama would meet either Tunisian giants Club Africain or Mali’s Djoliba AC in the second preliminary round, with a coveted place in the CAF Champions League group stage at stake.
While Medeama prepare for a heavyweight clash, Nations FC are getting ready to write a new chapter in the club’s history. The MTN FA Cup winners will face Mali’s FC Diarra in the first preliminary round of the CAF Confederation Cup.
The Kumasi based side will travel to Mali for the opening leg before hosting the return fixture in Ghana. If they progress, Nations FC will face either Niger’s AS Zam or Togo’s ASKO de Kara in the next round.
